Food truck ordinance designed to support Chicago small businesses

Throughout the nation, food trucks are the latest fad when it comes to fast food. Depending on the city in which one is located, the food is in some cases gourmet and is freshly prepared in the truck while patrons wait. Chicago is currently not one of the cities in which the food is prepared onsite however. At this point, there is a law on the books that makes it illegal for these small businesses to do so. Currently the food sold out of these trucks has to be prepared in a commissary or commercial kitchen that is not mobile.

Last week we wrote about Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's support in attracting start-up companies to the city. It appears that his interest in Chicago businesses extends beyond the tech field as he recently indicated that he is in favor of making it legal for food trucks in the city to make "food to order" for patrons. The mayor calls the proposal a common-sense change that would encourage growth of these types of small businesses in the area.

The new ordinance was introduced by Emanuel and three city aldermen. Under the proposed ordinance though each truck could only park at a designated food stand for a total of two hours at a time, they would be able operate around the clock, every day of the week.

What do you think about the proposed ordinance? Do you think it will have the intended effect of strengthening Chicago's small businesses described by Emanuel as the "backbones of our communities?"
