Chicago mayor proposes streamlined licensing for small businesses

Since he was elected mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel has made no secret of his desire to bring small businesses into the city. This week he announced another way in which he would like to achieve that goal. He is seeking to make it faster and easier for entrepreneurs in Chicago to secure both licenses and the finances necessary to make a go of it in a sort of one-stop-shopping situation.

Currently, anyone seeking to get a small business of the ground in the city of Chicago must deal with a variety of matters including but not limited to financing, licensing, zoning and permitting. Juggling matters such as these can be time consuming and confusing and in some situations could end up deterring a person from following his or her dream of being a small business owner.

The idea behind the new proposal is that individuals working in the area of small business licensing would obtain special training that would enable them to help the owners of these small businesses to obtain the things necessary to get a business off the ground.

To achieve the goal the Business Assistance Center that is currently in operation would be changed to the Small Business Center. The later would be found under the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. In addition, the current licensing office would be revamped and a chief small business officer added. The ideal candidate for this position would be someone who has actually experienced success in a Chicago small business.

The City Council will take up the mayor's proposal later this month. We will post updates on the matter as they become available.
